Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

Title: Starcrossed
Author: Josephine Angelini

Summary: How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

Review: If I had one word to describe Starcrossed, it'd be addicting. I could not put this book down! I devoured it.

Even with a slow start that quickly gets you introduced to all the characters and what's going on, I still wanted to know more. As I kept reading, Angelini sucked me into Helen's world. Awesome mythology and all.
The mythology is what got me hooked on this book first. Angelini had so many unique ideas and I loved seeing them in action. It'll be interesting to see how the mythology and prophecies, yes there are some, play into future books.

As for the characters, I wasn't all that impressed. The Delos were by far the most alive and awesome family I have seen in awhile. But Helen was just a little unrelateable, I can't exactly pinpoint the reason why but she just rubbed me the wrong way. I did like Lucas, though! I think that one's a no-brainer. Their romance started out unique, they hate each other, but then we get into all the problems with the romance. They are, as the title says, "Starcrossed" in their romance. Thanks to a handy google search that means the stars aren't working in their favor. More like greed, jealousy and the gods aren't working in their favor. It just annoys me!

The ending was, and the whole book, was filled with little twists and awesome bits of information. The ending, especially, is making me more than excited for the next book!

Other than the characters, I'm pretty much in love with this book. But it is long? Yes, it is! But don't let that turn you away. There might be something special for you waiting in Starcrossed.

I completely agree! Starcrossed is totally addicting, but I found it difficult to connect with Helen. Sigh. Still an overall fun book, though! :)

I'm glad you enjoyed this book! I found it a little difficult to connect to and I was distracted by similarities to other books. But I'm still curious what will happen in the sequel!

Don't you just love when a book grabs you and pulls you completely in? I haven't read this one yet but it is on my Kindle...
Thanks for the review!

I've read similar reviews for this book where the main character just wasn't liked at all by the reviewer, and even though hey all like the actual story, this kind of put me off. I think I'm going to wait for the second one to see if it fares any better before jumping in. Thanks for the great review!

Great review! I had been skeptical about this one but did finally buy it! It's in my TBR pile and I can't wait to get to it now! Love Greek mythology so I had to give this one a try!

Starcrossed was an amazing blend of Mythology and Romance. It was a long read, but I got through it, and I was glad I did! I haven't read a Modern Mythology book in a LONG time (Oh. My. Gods. by Tera Lynn Childs being the last...) and it just brings back so many memories of learning about the gods and the Trojan War and stuff. There was some stuff I didn't know, like the story of the Iliad (although I did watch the movie Troy) but that didn't matter.
